What is Puppy Chow?

Puppy chow is basically a homemade “candy” made from Chex cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar. These simple ingredients come together to make the most delicious and irresistable treat.

When do you eat Puppy Chow?

Puppy chow can be eaten 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

But, typically my family would always make it for get-togethers or holidays. It’s the type of dessert or snack you can have out for everyone to enjoy, especially because it makes such a large batch!

Additionally, this recipe ensures EVERYONE can enjoy it because it is vegan (dairy-free), gluten-free, and also can be refined-sugar-free.

What makes this Puppy Chow healthier?

Being gluten-free and plant-based, there are many times that I had to skip out on my favorite holiday treats, including my childhood favorite, Puppy Chow as the typical muddy buddy recipe is made with lots of butter.

If this sounds all too familiar to you, then you have come to the right place! I turned my favorite indulgent dessert into an even better version that is vegan, gluten-free, and even an option for being refined-sugar-free.

Healthier Puppy Chow

Whether you call it puppy chow or muddy buddies, this delicious peanut butter and chocolate recipe just got a healthier while also being gluten-free and vegan!


  • 7 cups Chex cereal
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup dark chocolate
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt
  • ¾ cup Monkfruit sweetened powdered sugar or regular


  • In a large microwave safe bowl, add the chocolate and peanut butter and microwave until melted, stirring every 30 seconds
  • Once melted, stir in the salt and vanilla
  • Then add the cereal and stir carefully with a rubber spatula until evenly coated
  • Place in the fridge for five minutes to allow it to cool slightly
  • Meanwhile, add half of the powdered sugar into a gallon Ziploc or Stasher bag
  • Add half of the muddy buddy mixture into the bag, then another layer of powdered sugar, and then the last of the puppy chow on top of that
  • Seal the bag and shake until all the cereal pieces are evenly coated
  • Pour mix onto a parchment lined baking tray and place in the fridge to finish cooling completely
  • ENJOY (store in a air tight container in the fridge)
